The Methods And Electrophysiology Of Surgical Ablation: Left Atrial Ablation
Dr. Gökhan ÖNEMa Dr. Ahmet BALTALARLIa
aKalp Damar Cerrahisi ABD, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi DENİZLİ Cox-maze III operation is gold standard for the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, many surgeons found the operation to be too complex and invazive. Recent data concerning the pathogenesis of AF have facilitated development of new strategies for surgical treatment of AF. Studies show that AF is usually a left atrial rhythm and pulmonary veins are responsible for a large number of cases of AF. For this reason, new surgical techniques for ablation are focused the creation of different lines of conduction block in the left atrium. The aim of this review is to describe the pathophysiology of AF, summarize the alternative energy sources used to surgical treat AF and overview the techniques of left atrial ablation. Keywords: Atrial fibrillation, ablation, surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Cardiovasc Surg-Spiecal Topics 2008, 1:28-33
