aKalp Damar Cerrahisi ABD, Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi İSTANBUL Atrial fibrillation (AF) significantly increases both mortality and morbidity related to cardiovascular disease. Cox- Maze III procedure has become the basic surgical procedure for surgical treatment of AF. The new practical procedures using the same principle, such as surgical radiofrequency ablation, have been developed and has become a widely accepted treatment modality for AF patients undergoing concomitant cardiac surgery. Up to date, it has been estimated that approximately fifty thousand patients have undergone surgical ablation for AF. Success rates ranging between 70-98% have been reported using these new procedures. This study includes all surgical spectrum of surgical ablation techniques and evaluates the current situation in view of the literatureKeywords: Atrial fibrillation, Cox-Maze III, cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, surgical ablationTurkiye Klinikleri J Cardiovasc Surg-Spiecal Topics 2008, 1:40-44
