A major cardiac procedure to treat a functional condition, such as AF, it has not been widely adopted. Over the last decade, the surgical treatment of AF has evolved rapidly, and a number of devices with various energy sources have been used to create linear lesions in the atria (endocardial, epicardial, or combined). Surgical techniques, such as off-pump surgery, and expanding indications for ablation, have resulted in development of epicardial approaches for surgical AF ablation. Although bipolar radiofrequency is presently the most reliable means to create transmural atrial scars, but the clamping design of bipolar devices has limited its epicardial use to pulmonary vein isolation. Keywords: Off pump; atrial ablationTurkiye Klinikleri J Cardiovasc Surg-Spiecal Topics 2008, 1:60-62
